What are common signs of cooling system failure?

As soon as you start your engine, its temperature begins a steady ascent. To ensure that it doesn't get too hot, your cooling system needs to be working like it should. If there's a problem with any of your cooling system's components, then overheating could lead to serious engine trouble, such as a cracked block. At Chuck's Auto Repair, our local mechanics can accurately diagnose your cooling system trouble and flawlessly fix it. Pay us a visit if you encounter any of the following symptoms of a failing cooling system.

Warning Signs of Cooling System Trouble

One common sign of a malfunctioning cooling system is that there is steam emerging from under the hood. This could be occurring because your coolant temperature has risen to its boiling point. In situations where you need to add coolant/water, you'll want to find a safe location and then be sure your engine has sufficiently cooled down before you open up the cap. If you don't wait for your engine to cool before opening the cap, you run the risk of scorching hot fluid spraying up at you.

Another familiar sign of cooling system trouble is that the dashboard temperature gauge has climbed into the red zone. When this happens, you can find a safe place to pull over and call up the shop to describe any symptoms. Then you can get advice on if it seems safe to drive further or if you'll be risking major damage by driving.

Cooling system leaks are a common cause of overheating. If your coolant has gotten especially low, then a leak could be present. With an internal coolant leak, there's a good chance that your exhaust smoke has turned noticeably white, which is a sign of a blown head gasket. It's also a good idea to keep an eye out for external coolant leaks. You'll want to periodically scan over the ground where you regularly park your vehicle and see if there is any evidence of fluid leaks. Externally leaking coolant is often identifiable by its bright green color. However, your coolant might be another color, like yellow, pink, or orange.
