Most Common Reasons Your Car Won't Start

Most Common Reasons Your Car Won't StartYour car is a complex machine that is made up of numerous parts and systems that work together to get you where you need to be. Several of those parts have a role in getting the engine started. It can be incredibly frustrating to jump in your car and have it not start, but a trusted auto shop will have you back on the road in no time. Based on what happens when you turn the key you can often figure out exactly what is the cause of the no start. Chances are, it's one of the following common no-start problems.

Dead Battery

If you turn the key and absolutely nothing happens it is probable that the battery is dead. A battery will die if the lights are left on, the radio is played with the lights off, a door is left ajar or some other component is draining it's juice when the engine is off. The good news is that you'll likely be able to jump start the car to get it up and running and the alternator will recharge the battery. Car batteries do die though and generally need to be replaced every two to five years.

Failed Alternator

As mentioned, the alternator is what keeps the battery charged. It is also responsible for providing the electricity that is used by the vehicle as the engine runs. Using the motion of the engine and a belt system, the alternator generates electricity. If it fails you'll have trouble operating the power windows, lights, radio and other items, and the battery will be drained of its power.

Malfunctioning Starter

The starter motor is fed an electrical charge when the key is turned or the ignition button is pushed. This causes it to actuate the bendix gear, which in turn spins the flywheel to get the motor spinning. If the starter starts to fail you'll often hear a loud click, or series of clicks when you turn the key. This is the sound of the starter actuating but not spinning.

Fuel Delivery Issue

Is there gas in the tank? Are you sure? Now that we got that cleared up, there still could be a problem getting gasoline to the engine. The most common fuel delivery issues include a faulty fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter, or a malfunctioning fuel injection unit. If gas isn't getting to the engine, the motor will crank over and over but not fire up.

There are several other reasons a car may not start, such as incorrect timing, a failed ignition switch or bad spark plugs, but the above are most common.
